PART 8
“He wants you to say you knew?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“So he can make it look like I was helping him.”
Patrice wrote something down.
I asked,
“Did you?”
“No!”
Her voice cracked.
“I swear, Miss C. I didn’t know.”
“I believe you.”
She started crying harder.
Then she said something that changed everything.
“There’s another woman.”
I froze.
“What?”
“Another woman.”
“Who?”
“I don’t know her name.”
“Then how do you know?”
“Because I found messages.”
My heart began pounding.
“What kind of messages?”
“Dale was texting her.”
“Where?”
“On the second phone.”
I looked at Patrice.
“What second phone?”
“A phone he keeps in his truck.”
Ashley took a shaky breath.
“He wasn’t just planning to divorce you.”
I whispered,
“What was he planning?”
“He was planning to disappear.”
That evening, I went home alone.
Dale’s truck wasn’t there.
The house felt strange without him.
Not empty.
Free.
I walked through every room slowly.
Twenty-six years of marriage had left evidence everywhere.
Our wedding photograph.
Our daughter’s graduation picture.
A dent in the kitchen wall from when we moved the refrigerator.
The dining table where we’d eaten Thanksgiving dinner every year.
The couch where Dale had fallen asleep watching football.
The bedroom where he’d kissed me goodnight while secretly building a life with another woman.
I went into his office.
This time, I wasn’t looking for documents.
I was looking for the second phone.
Ashley said it was in his truck.
I opened the garage.
His truck was gone.
Then I noticed something.
The spare work van was parked behind the house.
I opened the driver’s door.
Nothing.
I checked the center console.
Nothing.
Glove box.
