PART 4

PART 4

Daniel disappeared.

Eleanor refused to believe her brother.

She accused Harrison of trying to destroy her marriage.

They had their final argument on a rainy night.

Eleanor left the house.

She never came home.

Her car was found two days later.

She had died in an accident on a wet highway.

Harrison blamed himself.

But that wasn’t the end of the story.

Because the accident hadn’t been an accident.

According to the documents in the envelope, Daniel had been driving another car that night.

He had followed Eleanor.

They argued.

Their vehicles collided.

Daniel survived.

Eleanor didn’t.

And then Daniel disappeared.

Harrison spent decades trying to find him.

He never did.

But he never stopped looking.

I lowered the letter.

“So what does this have to do with me?”

The lawyer reached into his briefcase.

He pulled out another photograph.

This one showed me.

I was sitting beneath the oak tree at the nursing home.

I was laughing.

Harrison was watching me.

The photograph had clearly been taken secretly.

I stared at it.

“When was this taken?”

“Three months before Harrison proposed.”

I looked at the lawyer.

“Why was he having photographs taken of me?”

“He wasn’t.”

He pointed to the corner.

I looked closer.

A reflection appeared in the window behind me.

Someone had taken the picture from inside the building.

“Who?”

“The woman who sent it to Harrison.”

My pulse quickened.

“What woman?”

The lawyer didn’t answer.

Instead, he pulled out a file.

Inside was a driver’s license.

A bank statement.

And a recent photograph.

I looked at the photograph.

An older woman stared back at me.

She was perhaps sixty-five.

My mouth fell open.

I recognized her.

She was one of the nurses who had worked on Harrison’s floor.

I’d seen her dozens of times.

“Her name is Clara,” the lawyer said.

“She was Harrison’s private nurse.”

I remembered Clara.

She had always been kind to me.

But there was something else.

Something I hadn’t noticed before.

Clara had Eleanor’s eyes.

I looked at the lawyer.

“Is she related to Eleanor?”

He nodded.

“She is Eleanor’s daughter.”

I couldn’t speak.

“But Eleanor died sixty years ago.”

“Correct.”

“Then how—”

“Eleanor was pregnant when she died.”

I covered my mouth.

Harrison had a niece.

A child he never knew existed.

Clara had spent decades searching for him.

And eventually, she found him.

But why had she been watching me?

The lawyer opened another folder.

“Clara contacted Harrison approximately three years ago.”

“What did she want?”

“To meet him.”

“Did they?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t he tell me?”

“Because Clara had information about Daniel.”

I sat perfectly still.

The room seemed to tilt around me.

“The man who caused Eleanor’s death?”

“Yes.”

“He was alive?”

“He died eleven years ago.”

“Then what’s the secret?”

The lawyer looked at me.

“Daniel had a daughter.”

I felt my chest tighten.

“Clara?”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“Another daughter.”

He pulled out a birth certificate.

I stared at the name.

Then I stopped breathing.

It was a name I knew.

A name Harrison’s children knew.

A name that had been sitting at our family dinners.

A name belonging to someone who had hugged Harrison at Christmas.

His youngest daughter.

I looked up.

“That can’t be.”

The lawyer nodded slowly.

“Harrison’s youngest child was not biologically his.”

I couldn’t move.

For two years, I had watched that woman treat Harrison like a walking bank account.
