PART 8

PART 8

“That one I will admit.”

Victoria glanced at Daniel.

“What do you want?”

Voss stepped closer.

“The files.”

“I don’t have them.”

“I know.”

Victoria’s eyes narrowed.

“Then why bring me here?”

Voss smiled.

“Because you do.”

She shook her head.

“I don’t.”

“You’ve been looking for Daniel for three months.”

“Yes.”

“And you’ve collected every piece of evidence connected to his disappearance.”

“Yes.”

“Where is it?”

Victoria smiled.

“You made one mistake.”

Voss frowned.

“Which was?”

“You assumed I kept the evidence.”

She pulled out her phone.

“I didn’t.”

Voss’s expression changed.

“The entire investigation has been automatically copied to a secure government server.”

His smile disappeared.

“And every conversation we’ve had tonight has been transmitted.”

Voss looked around.

Then he heard footsteps.

Elena and the other officers entered.

“Commissioner Voss,” Elena said.

Voss’s face turned pale.

Victoria stepped toward Daniel and cut his restraints.

Daniel immediately collapsed against her.

“It’s over,” Victoria said.

Voss looked at her.

“You have no idea who you’re fighting.”

Victoria looked back.

“I know exactly who I’m fighting.”

She pointed toward the evidence room.

“A man who thought power meant immunity.”

Voss was handcuffed.

But just as Elena led him away, Voss stopped.

He looked at Victoria.

“You think this ends with me?”

Victoria said nothing.

Voss smiled.

“I’m not the top.”

Victoria’s eyes narrowed.

“Who is?”

Voss didn’t answer.

He simply smiled.

Then Elena pulled him away.

Six months later, the investigation had transformed the entire department.

Dozens of officers were suspended.

Several were arrested.

Millions of dollars in fraudulent contracts were uncovered.

Daniel testified before a government commission.

Mark Dalton received protection for cooperating.

Eric Cole eventually confessed.

Sarah Bennett was arrested after evidence proved she had helped Voss manipulate witnesses.

And Commissioner Adrian Voss was sentenced to prison.

But Victoria never forgot what he had said.

I’m not the top.

So she continued investigating.

One evening, Daniel visited her office.

He placed a small envelope on her desk.

“I found this in my old apartment.”

Victoria opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

It showed Voss standing beside another man.

A man Victoria recognized.

The director of the private contracting company that had received millions in government work.

On the back of the photograph were six words:

THE MONEY NEVER STOPPED MOVING.

Daniel looked at her.

“Are you going to keep going?”

Victoria looked at the photograph.

Then she smiled.

“Of course.”

Daniel laughed.

“I knew you’d say that.”

Victoria placed the photograph into a new evidence folder.

But this time, she didn’t feel afraid.

Because she had learned something important.

Power could intimidate people.

Money could buy silence.

And corruption could hide for years.

But it couldn’t hide forever.

Someone always noticed.

Someone always asked questions.

And sometimes, all it took was one person refusing to be frightened.

Victoria closed the folder.

Outside the window, the city lights began to glow.

She looked at her reflection in the glass.

Then at the folder on her desk.

The case was far from over.

But the first battle had been won.

And the young woman whom two traffic officers had once pressed against a car, believing she was powerless, had become the person they feared most.

Not because she carried a weapon.

Not because she had authority.

But because she had something far more dangerous to corrupt people:

the courage to uncover the truth.

And this time, nobody could take it away from her.
