PART 7

“She wasn’t afraid of Voss.”

“Then why did she run?”

“Because she was afraid of Daniel.”

Victoria stared at him.

“What are you talking about?”

Mark looked directly into her eyes.

“Daniel discovered that Sarah was the one who betrayed him.”

Victoria immediately left the interview room.

She called Elena.

“Where is Sarah?”

Elena answered.

“Still at the safe house.”

“Get her out.”

“Why?”

“She’s compromised.”

There was a pause.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

“Where should I take her?”

“Don’t take her anywhere.”

“What?”

“Stay there. I’m coming.”

Victoria grabbed her coat.

Then her phone rang.

Unknown number.

She answered.

“Victoria.”

She recognized the voice immediately.

The same voice from the recording.

“You should have listened.”

“Adrian Voss?”

A quiet laugh.

“You really are clever.”

“Where is Daniel?”

“Closer than you think.”

“Where?”

“Come alone.”

Victoria’s expression hardened.

“Where?”

The man gave her an address.

An abandoned warehouse outside the city.

Then the call ended.

Victoria stared at the screen.

Elena approached.

“What happened?”

Victoria told her.

Elena immediately shook her head.

“No.”

“I’m going.”

“Absolutely not.”

“He expects me to come alone.”

“Which is exactly why you shouldn’t.”

Victoria looked at her.

“You’re right.”

Elena blinked.

“You’re agreeing with me?”

“No.”

Victoria picked up her coat.

“I’m not going alone.”

Two hours later, Victoria stood outside the abandoned warehouse.

But she wasn’t alone.

Elena and four trusted officers surrounded the building.

No sirens.

No lights.

No obvious movement.

Victoria whispered into her radio.

“Wait for my signal.”

She walked inside.

The warehouse was dark.

A single light hung from the ceiling.

A chair sat beneath it.

And in the chair was a man.

His hands were tied.

His face was bruised.

Victoria stopped.

“Daniel?”

The man slowly lifted his head.

“Victoria?”

She stared at him.

She had seen his photographs hundreds of times.

It was him.

Daniel Cross was alive.

Before she could move, a voice came from behind her.

“You’re predictable.”

Victoria turned.

Adrian Voss stepped from the shadows.

He was dressed in a perfectly pressed suit.

No weapon visible.

No fear.

Just a calm smile.

“You’ve caused me a great deal of trouble.”

Victoria stared at him.

“You kidnapped Daniel.”

Voss shook his head.

“No.”

“You threatened witnesses.”

“No.”

“You ordered those officers to stop me.”

He smiled.
