PART 4
He froze.
Then recovered.
“That’s a business matter.”
“You’re right.”
I nodded.
“Then why did Melissa receive $75,000?”
His mouth opened.
Closed.
“She needed help.”
“From the company?”
“It’s my money.”
“No.”
His expression hardened.
“It is.”
“Not entirely.”
He stepped closer.
“You don’t understand business.”
I almost smiled.
“I built your financial model.”
“You worked on paperwork.”
“I secured the first bank loan.”
“Together.”
“I contributed six hundred and forty thousand dollars.”
“That was years ago.”
“Which is why I know exactly what I own.”
His face went pale.
For the first time that night, Daniel looked afraid.
“You don’t own anything.”
I said nothing.
He continued.
“You’re my wife.”
“And?”
“That means this company is ours.”
“Exactly.”
He frowned.
Then I smiled.
“Both of ours.”
He stared at me.
“You’ve been planning something.”
“No.”
I picked up my purse.
“I’ve been protecting something.”
“Claire.”
I stopped.
He lowered his voice.
“Don’t make this ugly.”
I looked back at him.
“You made it ugly when you called me a freeloader.”
Then I walked upstairs.
I didn’t sleep.
At 3:14 a.m., my phone buzzed.
Nina.
We found something.
I called immediately.
“What?”
“There’s another account.”
“What account?”
“A holding company.”
My heart stopped.
“Whose?”
“Technically, Prescott Holdings LLC.”
“Technically?”
“It’s registered under Daniel’s name.”
I sat up.
“What’s in it?”
“Three million, eight hundred thousand dollars.”
I couldn’t speak.
Nina continued.
“And Claire?”
“Yes?”
“There’s something else.”
“What?”
“Your name is on the original incorporation documents.”
My breath caught.
“What?”
“You’re listed as the controlling beneficiary.”
I stared into the darkness.
“Then why is Daniel using it?”
“I don’t know.”
“Find out.”
“I already started.”
By morning, everything changed.
At 7:06 a.m., Nina sent me a second message.
The $3.8 million came from company distributions. Daniel classified them as consulting fees.
I read it twice.
Then again.
Consulting fees.
For what?
I called her.
“How long?”
“At least four years.”
“Four years?”
“Yes.”
“How much total?”
“About six point two million.”
My stomach turned.
“Where did it go?”
“Some went to the holding company. Some went to investment accounts. Some went to property.”
“Property?”
“Three properties.”
“Whose names?”
She hesitated.
“Daniel’s mother owns one.”
I closed my eyes.
“Melissa owns another.”
“And the third?”
Nina was silent.
“Nina.”
“Your mother-in-law’s boyfriend.”
I laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because the absurdity was overwhelming.
The entire family had spent years telling everyone I was living off Daniel.
Meanwhile, they had been living off the company I controlled.
“Send me everything.”
“I will.”
“And Nina?”
“Yes?”
“Today’s the day.”
“What are you planning?”
I looked at the sunrise outside the window.
“I’m going to the office.”
At 8:32 a.m., I walked into Prescott Logistics.
The receptionist stood immediately.
“Good morning, Claire.”
“Good morning, Jenna.”
She looked nervous.
“Is Daniel coming in?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“I don’t know.”
I smiled.
“That’s okay.”
I walked toward the executive floor.
The employees became strangely quiet as I passed.
Some nodded.
Some looked away.
I understood why.
Daniel had spent years telling people I didn’t work there.
He had made sure everyone believed I was simply his wife.
But there were still a few people who remembered.
People who had been there when the company started.
One of them was Marcus Reed.
He had been Daniel’s first operations manager.
He stood when I entered the conference room.
