PART 4
She had badly underestimated how finished I was with her entitlement.
I didn’t panic, and I didn’t cancel my trip. Instead, I sat beside Lily, bought her hot cocoa and a croissant, and called Mark, Jessica’s ex-husband.
Mark and Jessica had settled a bitter custody dispute the previous summer.
Jessica had primary physical custody, but Mark had court-ordered visitation and an injunction preventing her from taking Lily across state lines without thirty days’ written consent.
Mark answered on the second ring, his tone businesslike. “Hello Brooke, is everything all right?”
“Mark, you need to listen to me very carefully,” I said, keeping my voice calm and completely steady. “Jessica, Mom, and Dad just boarded a flight to Orlando.
My flight boards in fifteen minutes, and both of their phones are turned off.”
The line went silent for five long seconds before Mark answered in a low, furious voice.
“Did you say she left our daughter alone in a terminal concourse?”
“Yes,” I replied. “I am standing right next to the airport police substation.
I am handing the handwritten note, Lily’s bag, and the airport surveillance details directly to the Port Authority transit officers right now.”
“Do it immediately, Brooke,” Mark commanded, his voice shaking with furious determination. “I am twenty minutes away at my regional office. I’m contacting my family law attorney and the local district attorney’s office right this second.
Do not let her get away with this.”
Within five minutes, two armed airport police officers and a social worker were taking my statement, photographing the sticky note, and reviewing terminal footage.
Airport security quickly pulled the high-definition surveillance recordings.
The cameras clearly showed Jessica and our mother walking Lily toward my gate, dropping her bag, attaching the note to the handle, then hurrying toward their own departure gate while laughing.
Mark arrived at the airport substation within twenty minutes carrying the custody paperwork.
Lily was safely placed with her father, comforted, and given a warm meal while authorities finished processing everything.
