PART 4

PART 4

My broken phone.

The screen was shattered into a spiderweb of glass.

I stared at it.

Then I looked at Caleb.

“You broke that because you were afraid of what I might say.”

He didn’t answer.

I smiled through my tears.

“You should have let me call my father.”

The ambulance doors closed.

And for the first time in four years, I was leaving my husband’s house without him beside me.

I didn’t know yet that the Christmas dinner would be the last time I ever entered that house as Caleb Calloway’s wife.

The hospital lights blurred above me.

A nurse attached monitors.

Another nurse started an IV.

A doctor examined me.

“Your baby’s heartbeat is strong.”

I cried.

“Really?”

“Yes.”

“She’s okay?”

“Right now, she looks stable.”

I closed my eyes.

For the first time since I hit the counter, I breathed normally.

Then the doctor asked the question that changed everything.

“Mrs. Calloway, did someone push you?”

I opened my eyes.

“Yes.”

“Who?”

“My mother-in-law.”

The doctor looked at the nurse.

“Document that.”

The nurse nodded.

Then the doctor asked another question.

“Did your husband prevent you from calling emergency services?”

“Yes.”

“Did he destroy your phone?”

“Yes.”

“Did he threaten you?”

I hesitated.

Then I remembered his words.

Who do you think they’re going to believe?

“Yes.”

The doctor nodded.

“I’m going to ask social work to speak with you.”

“Okay.”

A few minutes later, a woman named Elena entered.

She was a hospital social worker.

She sat beside my bed.

“I’ve been told there may be a domestic violence concern.”

I looked at her.

“There is.”

She listened.

I told her everything.

Not just Christmas.

Everything.

The insults.

The control.

The financial restrictions.

The way Caleb always defended Judith.

The way Judith would deliberately humiliate me.

The times Caleb had told me no one would believe me.

The time he had hidden my car keys because I wanted to visit my mother.

The time he had gone through my phone.

The time he had told me that if I ever embarrassed him in front of his colleagues, he would make sure I regretted it.

Elena wrote everything down.

Then she asked:

“Do you have somewhere safe to go?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“My parents.”

“Are they nearby?”

“Forty minutes away.”

“Can they come here?”

I nodded.

“I think so.”

Elena gave me a phone.

“Call them.”

I stared at it.

My hands trembled.

I dialed my mother’s number.

She answered on the second ring.

“Mara?”

The moment I heard her voice, I broke.

“Mom.”

Silence.

Then:

“What happened?”

I couldn’t speak.

My mother knew immediately.

“Are you hurt?”

“Yes.”

“Is the baby okay?”

“The doctor says she’s stable.”

My mother inhaled sharply.

“Where are you?”

I told her.

“We’re coming.”

“Mom.”

“Yes?”

“Don’t call Caleb.”

A pause.

“Why?”

“I don’t want him to know you’re coming yet.”

Another pause.

Then my mother’s voice became very quiet.

“Did he hurt you?”

I closed my eyes.

“He didn’t push me.”

“But?”

“He stopped me from calling for help.”

My mother’s breathing changed.

“Where is your father?”

“I don’t know.”

“I’ll wake him.”

“Mom, it’s Christmas morning.”

“I don’t care.”

Then she said something I had not heard her say in years.

“Mara, you don’t protect people who hurt you.”

I began crying again.

“I know.”

“We’re coming.”

She hung up.

Twenty minutes later, my father walked into the hospital.

He was still wearing the clothes he had slept in.

No robe.

No tie.

No security detail.

Just my father.

He saw me.

His face changed.

He didn’t ask questions.

He simply came to my bedside and took my hand.

“My girl.”

I started crying.

“Dad.”

He kissed my forehead.

“I’m here.”

I looked at him.

“I never told Caleb.”

“I know.”

“How?”

“Because if you wanted him to know, you would have told him.”

My father sat down.

“Tell me what happened.”

I did.

He listened to every word.

He didn’t interrupt.

He didn’t raise his voice.

He didn’t threaten anyone.

When I finished, he asked one question.

“Do you want me to use my position?”
