PART 4
And the down payment had come from an account that contained money from our joint savings.
I stared at the document until my vision blurred.
The room suddenly felt unbearably small.
Mark hadn’t simply abandoned me.
He had been preparing a second life.
And the pregnancy hadn’t destroyed his plan.
It had exposed it.
That Evening
There was a knock on my door.
I knew who it was before I opened it.
Mark stood on the porch.
Alone.
He looked exhausted.
“I need to talk to you.”
I kept the door mostly closed.
“You already said everything.”
“No.”
He shook his head.
“What else is there?”
He looked at me.
“I want to come home.”
I felt something inside me crack.
“Home?”
“Yes.”
“You don’t get to call it home after you left.”
“I made a mistake.”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“You made a choice.”
His eyes filled with tears.
“I love you.”
I stared at him.
“You loved me when you accused me of cheating?”
He looked down.
“I was scared.”
“You were cruel.”
“I know.”
“You moved in with another woman.”
“I know.”
“You publicly called me a liar.”
“I know.”
“You tried to make me sign papers saying I owed you money if the baby wasn’t yours.”
His face collapsed.
“I know.”
I opened the door wider.
“Then tell me why.”
He looked confused.
“Why what?”
“Why did you really leave?”
He didn’t answer.
I stepped closer.
“Was it Ashley?”
His face changed.
That was all I needed.
But before he could speak, I held up the hotel receipt.
“Or was it this?”
Mark’s face went completely white.
I watched him carefully.
“You lied to me.”
He stared at the paper.
“Emily…”
“You lied for months.”
“I can explain.”
“Then explain.”
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
I lifted the mortgage preapproval.
“And this?”
His eyes widened.
“Where did you get that?”
“From our records.”
“Emily, please—”
“Did our money pay for Ashley’s house?”
He said nothing.
“Did it?”
Finally, in a voice barely above a whisper, he said:
“Some of it.”
I felt my knees weaken.
Eight years.
Eight years of marriage.
Eight years of trusting him.
And all this time, he had been building another life.
I looked at him.
“Get off my property.”
“Emily…”
“Get off my property.”
He didn’t move.
So I said the words that I should have said the day he walked out.
“You wanted freedom.”
I pointed toward the driveway.
“Now you have it.”
He stared at me through tears.
Then he walked away.
But before he reached his car, he turned around.
“Emily?”
I didn’t answer.
His voice broke.
“There is something else you don’t know.”
I froze.
He looked terrified.
“About Ashley.”
Then he got into his car and drove away.
I stood on the porch, watching his taillights disappear.
And for the first time, I understood something.
The pregnancy wasn’t the biggest shock.
The twins weren’t the biggest shock.
Even the stolen money wasn’t the biggest shock.
Whatever Mark had just realized about Ashley…
was something he was terrified to tell me.
And somehow, I knew that when I finally discovered the truth, it would change everything.
I didn’t sleep that night.
Mark’s final words kept circling through my mind.
There is something else you don’t know. About Ashley.
What could possibly be worse?
I had already discovered the hotel.
The hidden transfers.
The house.
The stolen money.
The affair.
The divorce papers he’d prepared before I even knew I was pregnant.
What was left?
At 2:13 in the morning, my phone buzzed.
I grabbed it immediately.
It was Mark.
I need to tell you the truth. But I can’t do it over text.
I stared at the message.
Then another appeared.
Ashley has been lying to me too.
My heart stopped.
A third message followed.
The baby she told me she was carrying isn’t mine.
I sat completely still.
I read it again.
And again.
Then I whispered:
“What?”
For weeks, Ashley had acted as though she had won.
She had stood beside my husband while he accused me.
She had moved into his life while mine was falling apart.
She had watched him throw away eight years of marriage.
And now Mark was telling me she had been lying to him too.
My fingers hovered over the keyboard.
What baby?
Three dots appeared.
Then disappeared.
Then appeared again.
Finally:
She’s pregnant too.
I felt the blood drain from my face.
I immediately called Rachel.
She answered sleepily.
“Emily?”
“Mark says Ashley is pregnant.”
There was silence.
“Are you sure?”
“He just texted me.”
Rachel was suddenly wide awake.
“Do not meet either of them alone.”
“I wasn’t planning to.”
“Send me screenshots.”
I did.
She called me back ten minutes later.
“There’s something very strange about this.”
“What?”
“The timing.”
I frowned.
“Why?”
“Because if Ashley is pregnant, and she’s been telling Mark the baby is his, then Mark may have believed he was leaving you for a woman who was already carrying his child.”
I closed my eyes.
“But if she’s lying…”
“Then there’s a completely different story.”
I looked at the ultrasound pictures on my bedside table.
Two babies.
Two heartbeats.
And a husband who had accused me of betrayal while secretly building a new family with another woman.
Nothing about my life made sense anymore.
The next morning, Mark came to my lawyer’s office.
I didn’t sit across from him.
Rachel sat beside me.
Mark looked exhausted.
His shirt was wrinkled. His eyes were red.
For once, he looked like a man who had finally realized that his actions had consequences.
“I owe you the truth,” he said.
I folded my arms.
“Then tell me.”
He took a deep breath.
“Ashley told me she was pregnant three weeks before you told me.”
My stomach tightened.
“Three weeks?”
He nodded.
“She said the baby was mine.”
“And you believed her.”
“Yes.”
I stared at him.
“Then why did you accuse me?”
His eyes dropped.
“Because I was angry.”
“That’s not an answer.”
He swallowed.
“I knew about the vasectomy. I knew you couldn’t possibly be pregnant because I thought the procedure had worked. Then you showed me the test.”
He rubbed his forehead.
“I panicked.”
“Because you thought I cheated.”
“Yes.”
“But you already knew Ashley was pregnant.”
“Yes.”
I looked at Rachel.
She was watching him carefully.
I turned back.
“So you decided to leave me and move in with Ashley because you thought she was carrying your child.”
Mark nodded.
“Yes.”
“And you had already been cheating with her.”
His face tightened.
“Yes.”
I felt something inside me become strangely calm.
Not because it didn’t hurt.
Because I had finally stopped wondering whether I had somehow caused this.
I hadn’t.
He had made every choice himself.
“Why did Ashley tell you she was pregnant?”
Mark hesitated.
“She said she wanted us to be together.”
I almost laughed.
“How romantic.”
He looked ashamed.
“But two days ago, I found out she had been seeing someone else.”
Rachel leaned forward.
“Who?”
Mark shook his head.
“I don’t know his name.”
“You don’t know?”
“She had another phone.”
I looked at him.
“You lived with her.”
“I know.”
“And you didn’t know she had another phone?”
“No.”
“How convenient.”
He closed his eyes.
“Emily, I deserve that.”
“You deserve much worse.”
He nodded.
“I know.”
Then he pulled a folder from his bag.
“I found this in her car.”
He placed it on the table.
Rachel opened it.
Inside were medical records.
My eyes immediately went to the date.
The pregnancy test.
The estimated conception date.
The name of the clinic.
And then something caught my attention.
The dates didn’t match what Ashley had told Mark.
Not even close.
Rachel read the documents carefully.
Then she looked at me.
“Emily.”
“What?”
“These records indicate Ashley’s pregnancy was already several weeks along before she says she became involved with Mark.”
Mark’s face went pale.
“Exactly.”
I looked at him.
“How did you find this?”
“She left her purse in the car. I wasn’t looking for anything. I just saw the folder.”
Rachel continued reading.
Then she stopped.
“There’s another problem.”
“What?”
“Her medical record says the biological father is unknown.”
Mark stared at her.
“Unknown?”
Rachel nodded.
“There’s no confirmation that you’re the father.”
Mark looked like he’d been punched.
I leaned back.
“So you left your wife for a woman whose pregnancy you never confirmed.”
He didn’t answer.
“And accused me of cheating without a single test.”
His eyes filled with tears.
“I know.”
I shook my head.
“No, Mark. You don’t know.”
I pointed toward my stomach.
“You don’t know what you’ve done.”
He looked at me.
“You abandoned me when I was carrying your children.”
Those words broke him.
He lowered his head into his hands.
“I’m sorry.”
I watched him cry.
Once upon a time, seeing my husband cry would have destroyed me.
Now it only made me realize how much I had already cried alone.
But there was still one question.
Why had Ashley lied?
And what had she wanted?
Rachel discovered the answer within forty-eight hours.
Ashley had financial problems.
Serious ones.
Credit-card debt.
Personal loans.
Collections.
And a lawsuit from a former employer.
She had discovered that Mark and I owned significant equity in our home.
She had also learned that Mark had life insurance through his employer.
The moment I heard that, I felt sick.
“She wanted money.”
Rachel nodded.
“That’s what it looks like.”
Mark sat silently.
Then he whispered:
“She told me Emily was going to take everything in the divorce.”
I stared at him.
“She told you that?”
“Yes.”
“Of course she did.”
Rachel continued.
“She also appears to have convinced Mark that marrying her quickly would protect certain assets.”
Mark looked ashamed.
“I thought she was protecting me.”
