PART 6
Nina looked at me.
“Because Andrew has been helping Daniel move the money.”
I sat back.
For nine years, I had trusted these people.
I had invited them into my home.
Celebrated birthdays with them.
Paid for vacations.
Helped their children.
And all along, they had been quietly dismantling the company I built.
Nina reached into the box.
“There is one more thing.”
She handed me an envelope.
“What is it?”
“It was found in Daniel’s private office.”
I opened it.
Inside was a copy of a contract.
I read the first page.
Then the second.
Then the third.
My heart began pounding.
“Nina.”
“Yes?”
“This is dated six months ago.”
“Yes.”
“They were planning to sell the company.”
She nodded.
“Without you.”
I kept reading.
The proposed sale price was $42 million.
My husband had been preparing to sell the company for forty-two million dollars.
And the contract contained one sentence that made everything suddenly clear.
Upon completion of sale, Claire Morgan’s voting rights shall be terminated.
I stared at the words.
Then I looked up.
“They were going to steal my company.”
Nina didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
I slowly closed the folder.
For years, I had believed my marriage was the most important thing I had built.
I was wrong.
I had built something much bigger.
And now I was going to take it back.
My phone buzzed.
A message from Daniel.
We need to talk. Please come home.
I stared at it.
Then another message appeared.
I know what you found.
Then another.
Please don’t destroy our family.
I typed one sentence.
You should have thought about our family before you made me the biggest mistake of your life.
I pressed send.
Then I turned to Nina.
“Tomorrow morning?”
She nodded.
“Tomorrow morning.”
“What happens tomorrow?”
She opened the final folder.
“The board meeting.”
I looked at the papers.
“Good.”
Because tomorrow, Daniel would walk into the company believing he was still the man in charge.
And he had absolutely no idea that every person in that boardroom was about to learn the truth.
At 8:45 the next morning, I walked into Prescott Logistics wearing the same black suit I had worn to my father’s funeral.
Daniel used to say I looked intimidating in it.
That morning, I wanted intimidating.
I wanted clear.
I wanted every person in that building to understand that the woman they had spent years calling a freeloader had never been powerless.
She had simply been patient.
Nina walked beside me carrying two folders.
Marcus was already waiting outside the boardroom.
He looked at me.
“Ready?”
I nodded.
“No.”
He raised an eyebrow.
“I’m angry.”
He smiled faintly.
“That’s probably better.”
We walked inside.
The room was full.
Daniel sat at the head of the table.
His parents sat beside him.
Melissa was there too.
Andrew Bell sat across from them.
Two outside directors were already reviewing documents.
Daniel looked almost relieved when he saw me.
“There she is.”
I took the chair opposite him.
He leaned back.
“I think we can resolve this like adults.”
I looked at him.
“We’re not here to resolve anything.”
His smile disappeared.
“We’re here to document what happened.”
Nina placed a folder in front of every board member.
Daniel immediately stood.
“What is this?”
“Evidence.”
“Of what?”
“Financial misconduct.”
His mother jumped to her feet.
“This is ridiculous!”
Nina calmly said, “Please sit down, Mrs. Prescott.”
Daniel looked at me.
“You’ve lost your mind.”
“No.”
I opened my folder.
“I finally found it.”
“What?”
“The truth.”
I slid the first document across the table.
“Four years of unauthorized distributions.”
The room became silent.
Daniel glanced at the paper.
Then another.
Then another.
His face drained.
“You don’t understand those transactions.”
“I understand them perfectly.”
“You weren’t involved in the company.”
I looked around the room.
“That’s what he told everyone.”
Then I placed the original shareholder agreement on the table.
“My name is right here.”
One of the directors picked it up.
His eyebrows rose.
“Fifty-one percent.”
Daniel’s father suddenly spoke.
“That document is outdated.”
I turned toward him.
“No.”
Nina placed a certified copy beside it.
“It was amended twice. Both amendments confirm Claire’s controlling interest.”
Daniel slammed his hand onto the table.
“This is my company!”
The room went silent.
I looked directly at him.
“No, Daniel.”
I paused.
“It was our company.”
Then I pushed the forged authorization across the table.
“And you tried to make it yours.”
Daniel stared at the document.
His mouth opened.
No words came out.
Melissa suddenly started crying.
“This is insane.”
I turned toward her.
“You received seventy-five thousand dollars from company funds.”
“I paid it back!”
Nina looked at her.
“Not yet.”
Melissa’s face went white.
Her mother grabbed her hand.
“Claire, she’s your sister-in-law.”
